ABOUT
dave lamott, master craftsman!
Special Things Sheet Metal was established in 2002. After several years of working as a journeyman sheet metal worker, the decision was made to venture out on my own. After attaining my contractor’s license, I was able to tool up quickly and get to work in my trade. I started out by meeting the needs of my small clientele by doing things like roof metalwork, custom copper work, and the like. I never imagined that one day, all I would be doing is building hand-crafted custom kitchen hoods.
My story
It all started with one hideous copper hood a contractor asked me to make. I say hideous because by the time I hung it on the wall, that was the only word I could come up with to describe it. Regardless, more hoods came along, and I evolved and learned the craft. After 22 years, I’m no longer building the hideous, but I’m building some pretty nice hoods.
I still have the same clientele as when I began, along with many more. I have been building hoods for many of the finest builders in the San Francisco Bay Area. Most of my work centers in the heart of Silicon Valley. With quite enough work to go around, I am fortunate that I get to share this unique “niche” with only a few other highly skilled local craftsmen.
Finally… A Website!
For twenty two years now, I have yet to spend a single penny on advertisement. A constant flow of high-quality work is always before me, and I could not be more grateful. However, times and seasons change, and nothing will be forever except Bay Area traffic. Now that it’s becoming virtually impossible to navigate my way to work, I have decided to establish this website and see if I cannot wean myself off of the Bay Area.
95% of all communication regarding the construction of my custom hoods is now performed right on my phone. With a few pics, a sketch, a plan view, and a short conversation on the phone, we can easily dial in the design and head to fabrication. Once completed, if I cannot deliver it myself, I will crate it up and figure out how to get it to you. Once you take possession, I can work with you on the installation, whether you are the one installing or your general contractor.
Country Living
Born and raised mainly in the Bay Area, I migrated my way out to the Central Valley many years ago. Today, it’s just me and my animals doing the work.
I absolutely love working in the shop and get excited every time I get to start a new project. Experience has taught me well how to be efficient and how not to complicate things. Every hood is unique and has a “heart.” That one pesky little detail always has a way of robbing me of sleep. Maybe it’s the patina finish or finishing out a welded joint. Regardless, every job comes to pass, and that makes me happy. Getting paid makes me happy too 😁
